On March 21 by the initiative of the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Thailand at the Headquarters of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in Bangkok a festive event was held on the occasion of the International Day of Nowruz for the first time. The event, jointly organized by the embassies of India, Iran, Kazakhstan and the Consulate-General of Uzbekistan, was attended by representatives of the diplomatic corps, international organizations and state bodies of Thailand. A welcoming speech was made by the Deputy Executive Secretary of ESCAP,
Mr. Kaveh Zahedi. As part of the cultural program, musicians from Atyrau region performed works of folk art and Kazakh authors for dombra and kobyz, as well as the folk ensemble from Iran "Khojasteh". Guests had an opportunity to get acquainted with the traditions and customs typical for Nauryz and taste the dishes of national cuisine of countries celebrating this day.
The Nowruz Day, included in 2009 to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity as a cultural tradition of many peoples, marks the first day of spring and the renewal of nature. This holiday promotes the values of peace and solidarity, both between generations and within the family, as well as reconciliation and good-neighborliness, which contributes to the preservation of cultural diversity and the strengthening of friendship between peoples and various communities.
On February 23, 2010, at its 71st plenary meeting, the General Assembly recognized March 21 as the International Day of Nowruz.
