WASHINGTON, July 2, 2019 - On the main day of the official visit to the United States, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Beibut Atamkulov, held talks with the US National Security Adviser John Bolton and Secretary of State Michael Pompeo.
During the meetings, the sides discussed key issues of the bilateral agenda and the implementation of the agreements reached by the First President of Kazakhstan – Elbasy Nursultan Nazarbayev, and President Donald Trump in January 2018.
The US representatives welcomed the results of the presidential election in Kazakhstan and expressed their readiness for further development of cooperation across the entire spectrum of Kazakhstan-US relations.
At the US State Department, Beibut Atamkulov handed over letters from Nursultan Nazarbayev and President Tokayev addressed to President Trump on the US Independence Day. The Foreign Minister noted that the new President pays special attention to the development of an expanded strategic partnership with the United States.
During the talks, the American side expressed support for President Tokayev's programs for social, economic and political transformation and expressed readiness to provide the necessary assistance in implementing the planned reforms.
Discussing the economic agenda of bilateral relations, the sides noted the high level of trade and investment interaction between Kazakhstan and the United States despite the difficulties in the global economy. During 2018, the main indicators of economic cooperation showed a significant increase, the trade turnover tripled, while the inflow of American investment more than doubled.
During the meeting at the White House, John Bolton stressed the importance that the US attaches to the expanded strategic partnership with Kazakhstan. The sides confirmed their intention to continue the implementation of the existing agreements and plans, and had a thorough exchange of views on topical issues of the regional and international agenda.
In this context, John Bolton and Michael Pompeo reaffirmed their commitment to further expanding the strategic partnership. In particular, they discussed the diversification of the presence of American investment and technology in the economy of Kazakhstan in the fields of energy, transport, finance, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, and agriculture.
The sides discussed joint efforts of the two states to combat international terrorism, ensure regional security, and stabilize the situation in Afghanistan and other international issues. They agreed to continue joint efforts to ensure the sustainable development of Afghanistan through the implementation of social, economic and humanitarian projects both bilaterally and within multilateral platforms.
The American side highly appreciated the success of the implementation of the Kazakhstan's Zhusan operation, in which Kazakhstan repatriated around 600 citizens from the combat zones in Syria. Secretary of State Pompeo called the actions of Kazakhstan a real contribution to countering international terrorism and a model to follow for the rest of the world. Kazakhstan and the United States will continue cooperating on de-radicalization and effective re-socialization of returned citizens.
Special attention was also paid to the importance of the further development of the C5 + 1 regional platform between the states of Central Asia and the US.
