Republic of Kazakhstan – Republic of Bulgaria relations
June 5th, 1992 – the Protocol on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Republic of Bulgaria was signed.
January, 1994 – the opening of the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
December, 2004 – the Diplomatic Mission of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Bulgaria has started to work.
Since August, 2009 the Head of the Diplomatic Mission of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Republic of Bulgaria is Temirtay Izbastin.
Since February, 2015 the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Bulgaria to the Republic of Kazakhstan is Vasil Petkov.
The initial impetus to the development of Kazakh-Bulgarian relations was given by the official visit of the President of Bulgaria Zh.Zhelev to Kazakhstan in July, 1993. In September, 1999 the President N.Nazarbayev made the return state visit to Sofia. On September 25th, 2003 President of Bulgaria G.Parvanov paid the official visit to Kazakhstan and on December 1st, 2010 took part in the OSCE Summit in Nur-Sultan city.
The official visit of Prime Minister of Kazakhstan D.Akhmetov to Bulgaria was held on July 23-24, 2006.
On November 7-10th, 2015 the Chairperson of the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria T.Tsacheva officially visited Kazakhstan. During the visit T.Tsacheva held meetings with the Prime Minister K.Massimov, the Chairman of the Senate K.Tokayev, the Chairman of Majilis K.Zhakypov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs E.Idrissov, the Deputy Head of the Assembly of the people of Kazakhstan E.Tugzhanov, the Chairman of the Board of JSC NC “Astana EXPO-2017" A.Essimov. The Memorandum of cooperation between the Majilis of the Parliament of Kazakhstan and the National Assembly of Bulgaria and the Cooperation Agreement in the field of culture were signed as a result of this visit.
Trade and economic relations
The total trade volume in the first half of 2015 was 26.7 million euros. Export of Bulgaria to Kazakhstan for the first half-year 2015 was 12.2 million euros, import of Kazakhstan to Bulgaria in the same period – 14.5 million euros.
There are about 80 businesses with Bulgarian shares in Kazakhstan. In Bulgaria there are about 35 companies with Kazakh participation. The biggest of them is the Rompetrol Bulgaria, which have a nationwide network of gas stations.
Since April, 2015 in Sofia operates the Bulgarian-Kazakhstan Chamber of Commerce (BKCC) and since November of the same year the BKCC local office operates in Nur-Sultan city.
Cultural and humanitarian cooperation
The total ethnic Bulgarian population of Kazakhstan is about 4,500. Having the goal of reviving the national language, culture and traditions of Bulgarians in Kazakhstan in 1995 was established the Bulgarian ethnic and cultural center, which is actively involved in cultural activities.
On March 18th, 2015 the Center of Kazakh language, history and culture was officially opened in the Center for Eastern Languages and Studies of the Sofia University.
