Malaysia recognized the independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan on December 31, 1991. The bilateral diplomatic relations were established on March 16, 1992.
The Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Kuala Lumpur was opened in 1996. On May 9, 2019 by Presidential Decree Mr. Bolat IMANBAYEV was appointed as the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Malaysia.
Since December 10, 2012 Tunku Nuriddin Shahabuddin performs the duties of Honorory Consul of Kazakhstan to Malaysia.
The Malaysian Embassy to Kazakhstan was opened in 1996. Since February 21, 2017 Syed Mohamad Bakri Syed Abdul Rahman acts as the Ambassador of Malaysia in Astana.

July 18-20, 1996 – official visit of Prime Minister of Malaysia Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad to Kazakhstan.
September 11-14, 2003 – State visit of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King) of Malaysia Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin to Kazakhstan.
June 25-27, 2006 – State visit of the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev to Malaysia.
June 5-7, 2011 – official visit of Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato' Sri Najib Tun Abdul Razak to Kazakhstan.
April 17-18, 2012 – State visit of President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev to Malaysia.
May 22-24, 2014 – official visit of Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato' Sri Najib Tun Abdul Razak to Kazakhstan; the visit's program included the Prime Minister's participation in the VII Astana Economic Forum and II World Anti-Crisis Conference.
The visit culminated in adoption of the Joint Statement between the Republic of Kazakhstan and Malaysia, which proclaimed an agreement to promote the bilateral relations up to the level of “comprehensive partnership". Furthermore, the visit was marked by signing of several MoUs in various fields totaling 1 billion USD.
July 29-31, 2015, Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Mr. K.Masimov visited Malaysia within the framework of participation in the 128th session of the International Olympic Committee.

June 9-13, 2017 - Minister of Energy, Green Technologies and Water Resources of Malaysia Maximus Ongkili participated in the Ministerial Conference and the VIII International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development in Astana.
September 6-11, 2017 - the working visit of the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation of Malaysia Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau to Astana to attend the First OIC Summit on Science and Technology.
On April 15-18, 2018 the Minister of Defence and Aerospace Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan Mr. Beibut Atamkulov and Deputy Minister of Defence of the Republic of Kazakhstan Mr. Talgat Mukhtarov paid a working visit to Malaysia.
October 10-11, 2018 - MInister of National Unity and Social Welbeing of Malaysia Waytha Moorthy Ponnusamy participated in the 6th Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions in Astana.
October 14-16, 2013 – delegation of the Malaysian Parliament led by President of the Dewan Negara (Senate) Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang paid an official visit to Kazakhstan.
High-ranking representatives of “Nur Otan" party participated as international guests in the annual General Assemblies of the United Malays National Organization.
December 6-7, 2017 - Secretary of the Nur Otan Party Kanybek Zhumashev took part in the General Assembly of the OMNO Party in Kuala Lumpur.
Consultations between foreign offices
On June 28-30, 2011 the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the two countries held first Political consultations.
On June 13, 2017, inter-MFA political consultations were held at the level of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Akylbek Kamaldinov and Secretary-General of the Foreign Ministry of Malaysia Datuk Seri Ramlan bin Ibrahim.
Kazakhstan and Malaysia share similar approaches to the topical issues in the international relations (combating international terrorism and extremism, dialogue between the Muslim world and the West, creation of a just system of trade and investments for developing nations, etc.).
Astana and Kuala Lumpur stand for reforming the UN and expanding the membership of its Security Council, as well as actively cooperate within the OIC, CICA (Malaysia is an Observer State to CICA), Asia Cooperation Dialogue.In 2006, former Prime Minister of Malaysia Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad took part in the II Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions. The V Congress on June 10-11, 2015 was attended by Chief Executive Officer of the Global Movement of Moderates (GMM) Dato' Saifuddin Abdullah.
