Foreign Minister Meets with Participants of Nazarbayev Prize Award Ceremony

NUR-SULTAN, August 28, 2019 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Beibut Atamkulov met with the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy Franco Frattini, the former Director General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons Ahmet Uzumju, the Deputy Chairman of the Nuclear Threat Initiative and the former British Secretary of Defense Desmond Brown, the Co-Chair of the International Bureau of Peace Rainer Brown, and a renowned international disarmament and non-proliferation expert, Tarik Rauf.

The guests arrived in the capital of Kazakhstan to participate in the award ceremony of the Nazarbayev Prize for a Nuclear-Weapon-Free World and International Security.

During the event, the Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan spoke about the importance of  August 29 for Kazakhstan – the date of the closing of the Semipalatinsk test site. The date was also chosen  by the UN General Assembly on the initiative of the First President of Kazakhstan - Elbasy Nursultan Nazarbayev, as the International Day against Nuclear Tests. He expressed appreciation for the continued support to Kazakhstani initiatives and his willingness to discuss proposals for expanding comprehensive cooperation.

In turn, the meeting participants noted the role of Nursultan Nazarbayev in promoting anti-nuclear initiatives and his contribution to ensuring international security. In addition, they appreciated the achievements of the First President in building a modern state. An intention was voiced to further cooperate with the Kazakh side in promoting initiatives aimed at ensuring global security.
