NEW YORK, September 11, 2018 - The trilateral meeting of the leaders of Iran, Russia and Turkey in Tehran on the Syrian settlement demonstrated the positive role of the Astana process in coordinating international activities related to the Syrian peace process. This included the preservation of the political unity and integrity of the country. This was stated by the Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the United Nations KairatUmarov at a meeting of the UN Security Council.
The meeting of the UN Security Council was organized at the initiative of the Russian side in connection with the increased attention to the situation in Syria. In addition to the members of the Council, Permanent Representatives of Iran and Turkey to the UN also participated.
During the session the head of the Kazakh delegation noted that the world community should direct joint efforts to create conditions for the settlement of the intra-Syrian conflict exclusively by peaceful means. It also called for therestoration of thecountry destroyed by war and asolution to the difficult humanitarian situation. “We also need to support the creation of conditions for the return of numerous Syrian refugees. In this regard, the idea of convening an international conference on Syrian refugees can be the first step towards solving the problem” Mr. Umarov said.
Referring to the situation in Syria, the Ambassador of Kazakhstan emphasized the importance of cooperation between the guarantor countries of the Astana process in the fight against the terrorist groups ISIS, Al-Nusra Front and Al-Qaeda as well as the relevance of dissociation of terrorists from armed opposition groups which are involved in the ceasefire. He noted with satisfaction the ceasefire in Idlib which is creatingnew opportunities for the political process.
At the meeting of the UN Security Council, Kazakhstan confirmed again that acute international problems can be solved only on the basis of respect, trust and constructive cooperation. The efforts of Iran, Russia and Turkey to protect civilians and improve the humanitarian situation in Syria including the restoration of the Syrian economy and infrastructure, as well as the solution of important social problems were highly appreciated.
