ASTANA, 7 September 2018 – The Commissionon Nonproliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan held its regular 15th session, under the chairmanship of Kazakhstan's Minister of Foreign Affairs Kairat Abdrakhmanov.
The purpose of the Commission is to coordinate the work of Kazakh state bodies in the fulfillment of international obligations ofnuclear disarmament and nonproliferation, and on the implementation of the President's global initiatives in this area.
The focus of the meeting was on strengthening the nuclear and biological security of the country, and on strengthening its export control system and interaction with the international community.
The Commission summarised the results of Kazakhstan's chairmanship ofthe UN Security Council in January this year,and outlined theongoing activities of the Kazakh delegation at the council. The Foreign Minister reminded the session's participants of President Nursultan Nazarbayev's historic speech at the meeting of the Security Council on January 18 this year, themed 'Nonproliferation of WMD: Confidence Building Measures', which received wide support acrossthe world.
Participating in the meeting of the Commission, heads of ministries and departments reported on the progress made to implement instructions given in the previous period.
