General Information

January 19, 1992, diplomatic relations were established.

Since October 1992 the British Embassy operates in Kazakhstan.

Since February 1996 the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan operates in the UK.

From February 2017, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the United Kingdom is Mr Erlan Idrissov.

Since January 2018, His Majesty's Ambassador to the Republic of Kazakhstan is Michael John Gifford.

Political cooperation

Kazakhstan and the United Kingdom have established a constructive dialogue that promotes regular exchange of visits at all levels.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, nine visits of President Nursultan Nazarbayev to the UK took place (in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2006, 2012, 2013 and in November 2015).

The members of the royal family who visited Kazakhstan are the heir to the British throne Prince Charles of Wales (1996), Princess Anne (1993), Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester (2000, 2017), Prince Andrew, the Duke of York (2003, 2006, 2007 and 2010) and Prince Michael of Kent (2009).

June 30 - July 1, 2013, for the first in the history of bilateral relations, the state visit of British Prime Minister David Cameron to Kazakhstan took place. A Joint Statement on Strategic Partnership between two countries was signed as a result of this visit.

In February 22-24, 2015 Prime Minister of Kazakhstan K.Massimov paid a visit to the United Kingdom, where he attended Global Law Summit devoted to 800th Anniversary of Magna Carta.

The official visit of President N.Nazarbayev to the UK took place on 2-4 of November 2015. Following the visit, both parties noted strengthening of the strategic partnership and widening of political dialogue between two countries.

Inter-Parliamentary ties

In October 2015, the All-Party Cooperation Group with the Republic of Kazakhstan resumed its work in the Parliament of the United Kingdom
(the group's activities were suspended in connection with the general elections held on May 7, 2015).

The first ever visit of a group of British MPs of the All-Party group to Astana took place in October 2016 within the framework of which they held meetings with the leadership of the chambers of the Kazakh Parliament, the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan and other heads of ministries and authorities.

Cooperation on ministerial level

In 2008, 2011, 2013 and 2016 Secretary of State - Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan K. Saudabayev, Foreign Ministers of the Republic of Kazakhstan E.Kazykhanov and E.Idrissov visited to London.

As a part of the Joint Statement on Strategic Partnership, the first Kazakh-British political consultations were held on October 3, 2014 in London, where parties discussed the topical issues of the international agenda (the Kazakh delegation was headed by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan - A.Volkov, the British - by the Political Director of the Foreign Office S.Gass).

On October 8-9, 2015, the second political consultations took place in Astana, the Kazakh delegation was headed by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan - A.Volkov, the British - by the Parliamentary Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs T. Elwood).

The third (October 6, 2016, London) and the fourth (November 19-22, 2017, London) meetings of the Strategic Dialogue were held at the level of foreign ministers.

Trade and economic cooperation

The mutual trade turnover in January- December 2017 amounted to 1,28 billion dollars (exports - 926,7 million dollars, imports - 358,9 million dollars). The volume of mutual trade in 2016 amounted to 1.26 billion USD.

UK takes the 6th place in terms of accumulated direct investment in Kazakhstan's economy.

There are more than 500 legal British entities in Kazakhstan, branches and representative offices. They include such corporations as RoyalDutchShell and Ernst & Young.

In addition to the Samruk-Kazyna representation, such domestic companies like «Kazmortransflot» and «Air Astana» also represented in the UK.

On the London Stock Exchange (LSE) there are 4 Kazak companies with a total capitalization of 5.8 billion pounds (EP KazMunaiGas, HalykBank, Kcell, Kazkommertsbank) and 4 companies with major assets in Kazakhstan (Nostrum Oil & Gas, KAZ Minerals, Goldbridges, Chagala Group).

A key mechanism for the development of economic and trade cooperation is a Kazakh-British Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation, created on October 30, 2013.

The first meeting of the IGC was held on November 5, 2014 in Astana during the official visit of the Minister of Trade and Investments of Great Britain, Lord Livingston.

In February 2015 JSC “Samruk-Kazyna” and UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) agency established the Business Council, which first met in November 2015, on the sidelines of the official visit of the Head of State in the UK.

The second meeting of the IGC was held within the framework of the visit of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the UK on November 3, 2015. The issues of bilateral cooperation on a number of projects, as well as in the framework of the “New Silk Road” initiative, EXPO-2017 and the establishment of the International Financial Center in Astana were discussed.

Following the results of the IGC, 23 documents were signed for the amount of about $ 13 billion, including the contract for the participation of Britain in EXPO-2017, memoranda of cooperation in the creation and development of AIFC, the construction of a gas pipeline in Kazakhstan etc.

In November 2016 in London, following the results of the third meeting of the Kazakh-British intergovernmental commission 8 documents were signed.

On December 11, 2017 in London, the fourth meeting of the Kazakh-British IGC was held. As a result, 4 documents were signed.

Cooperation in the Judiciary sphere

In recent years a legal cooperation greatly expanded - a visit of the UK Deputy Minister of Justice E.Faulks to Kazakhstan (October 2014), as well as the visit of Prosecutor General A.Daulbayev to the UK (December 2014).

The key outcome of these visits was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the General Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the UK Ministry of Justice in the legal sphere and the establishment of a joint consultative committee.

Within the framework of the official visit of the Head of State to the UK in November 2015 signed the Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters, as well as a number of inter-agency cooperation agreements between the General Prosecutor's Office, Ministry of Justice and the national criminal agency.

Cultural and humanitarian cooperation

The countries have established close ties in the field of education.

In 2014, the parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the affiliate program “Newton-Al Farabi” in the amount of 12 million pounds. The program provides support for innovative and collaborative research, funding is provided on an equal basis.

With the support of «University College London» In the “Nazarbayev University” is implemented a program to prepare for university education, as well as the project to create a School of Engineering. With the support of BG company in the Energy Research Centre of “Nazarbayev University” functions Scientific Library, provided scholarships for training and staff development.

In 2015 13 intercollegiate agreements were signed, including a memorandum between the MES, “Nazarbayev University” and the University of Cambridge on the establishment of the Center for Turkish Studies.

Nowadays more than 600 students Bolashak students are currently attending Master and other courses in leading UK universities.

New prospects for cooperation opened in the framework of the signed in November 2015 a Memorandum of Cooperation in the sphere of public service. The document provides cooperation between the parties on the preparation of professional staff.
