General information

31 December 1991 - Kingdom of Belgium recognized the sovereignty of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

25 August 1992 – Diplomatic relations were established.

15 April 1993 – The Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan was opened.

From 1996 Honorary Consul of Belgium in the Republic of Kazakhstan is D.Pariss.

From September 1998 – Honorary Consul of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Belgium with headquarters inAntwerp is JohnStupas.

In January 2006 – The Embassy of Belgium in the Republic of Kazakhstan was opened (in Astana).

Since 2017 Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Belgium in the Republic of Kazakhstan is Mr Alexis de Crombrugghe de Picquendaele

Since 2018 - Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Belgium is Ms Aigul Kuspan.

Political cooperation

Since theestablishment of diplomatic relations, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N.Nazarbayev, has paid4 visitsto the Kingdom ofBelgium (in 1993, 2000, 2006 2010 and 2014).

The Prime – Minister of Belgium visited Kazakhstan Jean-Luc Dehaene (1998), Crown Princeof Belgium Philip (2002, 2010).

Atthe OSCE summit inAstana on 1-2December 2010, Belgiandelegation was headed by acting PrimeMinister ofthe Kingdom of Belgium I.Leterm.

A workingvisit of PrimeMinister K.Masimov of Kazakhstan was held in 1-2 May 2012, during whichhe metwith PrimeMinister of Belgium E.diRupo, President of theEU H.vanRompuy, EU Commissioner forTrade deGucht, President of the EuropeanCommission JMBarroso, President of the EuropeanCourt V.Skuris and the others.

Trade and economic cooperation

For 2016 the volume of bilateral trade amounted to 299.5 million of USD.

The volume of mutual trade in January-December 2017 amounted to 286,6 million USD (export – 158,1 million USD, import – 128,5 million USD).

The structure of mutual trade has already become traditional. In Belgium ferrous metals are exported, as well as wool, textiles and textile products, base metals and its articles, chemical products and allied industries. Kazakhstan imports cars and equipment, machinery, electrical equipment, mineral products, optical, photographic and other instruments and devices, textile products, food industry, tobacco, chemical and related fields of industries.

Cultural and humanitarian cooperation

In March 2012, during the visit of the delegation of the international organization "Mayors for Peace" headed by the mayor of the Belgian town of Ypres L.Dehane in Kazakhstan sides signed a memorandum on the establishment of friendly relations between the cities of Families and Ypres.
