October 17, 1992 - establishment of diplomatic relations.

December 16, 2001 - the official opening of the Apostolic Nunciature in Astana.

October 10, 2016 - the Apostolic Nuncio (Ambassador) of the Holy See to Kazakhstan is Archbishop Francis Assisi Chullikatt.

Since 2017 Zhanar Aitzhanova is Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Vatican

Political relations

Kazakhstan and the Vatican enjoy a close and trusting relationship.

September 24, 1998 – the first official visit of President Nursultan Nazarbayev to the Vatican, during which an agreement was signed on the relationship between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Holy See.

September 22-25, 2001 – the State pastoral visit of Pope John Paul II by invitation of the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev.

February 6, 2003 – meeting between President Nursultan Nazarbayev with Pope John Paul II and the Vatican Secretary of State A.Sodano (within the official visit to Italy).

November 29 - December 4, 2010 – official visit of the Secretary of State of the Holy See, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone in Kazakhstan.

September 5-9, 2012 - official visit of the Papal Legate, dean of the College of Cardinals A.Sodano to Kazakhstan.

February 6-7, 2013 – in the framework at the visit to Vatican of the Chairman of the Senate of the Republic of Kazakhstan K.Mami met with Pope Benedict XVI, with the Papal envoy, dean of the College of Cardinals of the Holy See Cardinal A.Sodano, Secretary for Relations with States of the Vatican Secretariat of State D.Mamberti, as well as the Chairman of the Pontifical Council for interreligious dialogue Jean-Louis Tauran.

October 8, 2015 - in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the APK the Vatican hosted scientific-practical conference and photo exhibition “Inter-ethnic and inter-confessional concordance in the modern world".

The Vatican takes an active part in the work of the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions.
