On 23 June 2017, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva Zhanar Aitzhanova had a meeting with Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) William Lacy Swing.
The parties discussed pressing issues of the international migration agenda and prospects for further enhancement of bilateral cooperation between Kazakhstan and the IOM.
Lacy Swing expressed satisfaction with the high level of engagement on migration issues between the Government of Kazakhstan and the IOM. The IOM Director General also noted the important role of Kazakhstan in the promotion of the Almaty Regional Consultative Process aimed at improving cooperation on migration and refugees issues in the Central Asian region.
Aitzhanova congratulated the IOM Head for the entry of the Organization to the UN Family in September 2016.
The Kazakhstan Permanent Representative also thanked the IOM for the guidance and technical support provided to Kazakhstan, including in the areas of national migration legislation, capacity building, labour migration management and counter-trafficking.
Aitzhanova informed the counterpart about the recently established Migration Service Committee under the Ministry of Internal Affairs as well as highlighted the main directions of Kazakhstan's international cooperation in the field of migration, including in the framework of elaboration of the Global Compact on Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.
