MOSCOW, April 5, 2019 - Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Beibut Atamkulov recently took part in a meeting of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), held in Moscow under the chairmanship of Turkmenistan.
During the event, foreign ministers discussed issues related to interaction within the Commonwealth. Special attention was paid to strengthening the cooperation of the CIS member states in countering modern challenges and threats, as well as expanding cooperation in the economic, cultural, humanitarian, scientific and technical fields.
The heads of delegations heard a report on the implementation of the Plan of Multi-level Consultations between Foreign Ministries within the CIS in 2018, and approved the new plan for 2019. According to this document, there are plans to hold consultations on foreign policy planning, countering modern challenges and threats, disarmament issues, developing economic cooperation, information collaboration, as well as collaboration with international organisations such as the UN, OSCE and EU.
During the meeting, Mr. Atamkulov emphasised that “Kazakhstan, being a reliable and active participant in the CIS, aims to keep developing mutually beneficial cooperation between the Commonwealth member states in all spheres.”
The Foreign Minister noted that thanks to joint efforts, the initiative of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan - Elbasy Nursultan Nazarbayev to modernise the CIS had been successfully implemented. As a result, there has recently been a noticeable increase in the interest of member states in the organisation's activities.
In addition, the need to enhance economic interaction between the CIS countries was emphasised, in accordance with the instructions of the leaders of the CIS member states.
The Kazakh Foreign Minister also praised the chairmanship of Tajikistan in the Commonwealth in 2018, noting that it was a busy and productive period. At the same time, the Kazakh side congratulated Turkmenistan on accepting the chairmanship in the organisation and expressed readiness to fully contribute to the successful implementation of the Chairmanship Concept proposed by the Turkmen side.
As part of the meeting, the heads of delegations reviewed the draft Programme of Action to intensify partnership between the foreign ministries of the CIS member states, initiated by Turkmenistan. The attendees also approved draft international treaties on the coordination of intergovernmental relations across research, cooperation in museum affairs, as well as non-custodial sentencing and enforcement, which will be submitted to the upcoming meetings of the CIS supreme bodies, the Council of Heads of State and the Council of Heads of Government.
Foreign ministers adopted an Address on the need to preserve and properly care for war graves and military monuments of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, and approved the draft Statement of the heads of CIS member states on the 80th anniversary of World War II.
The next meeting of the Council of CIS Foreign Ministers will be held in Ashgabat on 10 October 2019.
