The 61st session of the International Atomic Energy Agency General Conference opened on 18 September 2017 in Vienna.
The delegation of Kazakhstan, headed by the Minister of Energy Kanat Bozumbayev participated in the work of the General Conference. The Kazakh delegation also included representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Energy, JSC NAC “Kazatomprom”, the National Nuclear Center and other organizations. The head of the Kazakh delegation also met with IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano, US Secretary of Energy Rick Perry, Rosatom Director General Aleksey Likhachev and the Minister of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine Igor Nasalik, as well as with the Head of the European Union Delegation G.Thomas.
In his speech, the head of the Kazakh delegation drew attention to the global initiatives of the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev which were announced during the opening ceremony of the IAEA LEU Bank Storage Facility in Kazakhstan on 29 August this year. He also briefed the participants of the Conference about the contribution of our country to strengthening the nuclear weapons non-proliferation regime, the status and prospects of cooperation between the Kazakhstan and the IAEA in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
K. Bozumbayev and Y. Amano presented a photo display dedicated to the commissioning of the building of the IAEA LEU Bank in Kazakhstan. K. Bozumbayev handed over to the IAEA Director General the model of the Bank's building as a gift of our country.
The “NAC “Kazatomprom” JSC and National Nuclear Centre's exhibition has been taking place at the Vienna International Center for the whole period of General Conference.
During this event, delegations from 164 Member States consider the annual report of IAEA and the report on nuclear security, as well as the Agency's reporting, program and budget. The General Conference focuses on issues related to the prospects for the development of nuclear power, strengthening international cooperation in the field of nuclear and radiation safety, peaceful use of nuclear energy and nuclear technologies and their application, technical cooperation, enhancing the effectiveness and effectiveness of safeguards.
The International Atomic Energy Agency was established in 1957. On February 14, 1994, the Republic of Kazakhstan became the 121st member state of the IAEA.
