Kazakhstani-German relations



General information

11 February 1992 - establishment of diplomatic relations.

December 1992 – Opening of the Embassy of Germany in Almaty.

September 1993 – Opening the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Bonn, which was relocatedto Berlin in1999.  

From 12 March 2008 to 4 July 2014 - Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Federative Republic of Germany was N.Onzhanov.

From 25 October 2011 - Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Federal Republic of Germany in the Republic of Kazakhstan is G.Herz.


Political relations

Since theestablishment of diplomatic relations, the President of Kazakhstan N.Nazarbayev has made 7 officialvisitsto Germany (in 1992, 1997, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2009 and 2012).

Kazakhstan has been visited by the President of Germany R.Herzog (1995), the Federal Chancellor G.Schröder (December 2003), the President H.Köhler (September 2008) and the Federal Chancellor A.Merkel (July, December 2010).

In the following years high-level visits are routinely exchanged.

Interparliamentary relations are gradually developing.

Political consultations between the Foreign ministries are held on permanent basis.


Trade and economic cooperation

Germany is one of the leading trade partners of Kazakhstan, in 2013 Germany was onthe 5th place among EU States (the volume of trade in 2013 exceeded USD 3,233 billion, export – 427 million, import – 2,806 billion).

Days of Kazakhstan's economy in the largest industrial and financial centers of Germany are held regularly, as well as the Days ofGerman Economyin Almaty. These activities contribute the development of partnerships between small and medium businesses of the two countries.

Inter-regional contacts are consistently developing.

Activities of the Kazakh-German Intergovernmental Working Group on Trade and Economic Cooperation (IWGTEC) are beneficial for the development of mutually beneficialcontacts. Kazakh-German Business Council for Strategic Cooperation operates since July 2010.


Cultural and humanitarian cooperation

Coordinating body for the development of cultural cooperation between the two countries is a Kazakh-German Intergovernmental Commission (IC) of Cultural Cooperation.

In education, a successful example of cooperation is the joint work on the development of the Kazakh-German University in Almaty. In Kazakhstan the representative officesof the GoetheInstitute and German Academic Exchange Service DAADwere opened.

Due to the increasing number of Kazakh students studying in Germany, office of the Center for International Programs "Bolashak" in Germany was opened in 2009.

Since 2006 the joint project «Kazakhlibrary» is implemented.

2009 was the Year of Kazakhstanin Germany, 2010 was the year of Germany in Kazakhstan.  

An important link in the relationship between the two countries are Kazakhstan citizens of German nationality (about 180 thousand persons), as well as former Kazakhs living in Germany (more than 900 thousand pers.) and ethnic Kazakhs (about 1 thousand). In order to support the interests of the German community in Kazakhstan, the Kazakh-German Intergovernmental Commission for ethnic Germans living in the Republic of Kazakhstan is functioning.

In Kazakhstan regional German ethno-cultural associations are successfully operated, Republicnewspaper «Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung» is published, the Association of Germans in Kazakhstan "Wiedergeburt" runs actively.
