Kazakhstan- Italy relations

 

General information

On June 12, 1992 – diplomatic relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Italian Republic were established.

In October, 1992 – the Embassy of the Italian Republic in the Republic of Kazakhstan was opened (since April, 2005 is in Astana).

In 1996 – the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Italy was opened.

Since June, 2012 – the Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Italy is A.Yelemesov.

Since September, 2014 – the Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Italian Republic in the Republic of Kazakhstan is Stephan Ravanian.

Political relations

The President of Kazakhstan NursultanNazarbayev made official visits to Italy in 1994, 1998, 2003 and 2009. During the last visit in 2009 the Agreement on strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and Italy was signed

In 1997, Italian President O.L.Skalfaro an official visit to the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Visits of the Italian leaders to Kazakhstan: President Skalfaro in 1997, Prime-Minister Prodi in 1998 and 2007, Prime-Minister Berlusconi in 2008 (short-term visit) and 2010 (OSCE Summit).

June 12, a working visit of the President of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic M.Renzi in Kazakhstan.

In the Parliament of Italy and the Majilis created inter-parliamentary friendship group. Strengthening of relations between parliamentarians contribute to the working visits of parliamentary delegations to Italy Kazakhstan in 2007, 2009 and 2010.

Trade and economic cooperation

According to the official source, in 2013 the trade turnover totaled 16.216 billiondollars (exports - 15.223 billion, import – 0.993 billion), in 2014 bilateral trade between the two countries reached a record high – 17,09 billion dollars (exports – 16.05 billion, imports – 1.04 billion).

Italy ranks third among the trade partners of Kazakhstan: currently, the share of the Apennines in the total turnover of the country is 22,0 % (following Russia, China),and the first - among European (in the first half of 2014 Italy ranked first).

An important instrument for the development of Kazakh-Italian relations in trade-economic sphere is the Kazakh-Italian Intergovernmental Working Group on Industrial and Economic Co-operation and exchange (IWG).

Last, the 6th, the IWG meeting was held in 2011 in Astana. 7th meeting toke place  in Rome in February 2015.

In 2007, the Business Council has been established in Kazakhstan and Italy, which effectively operates to this day.

Cultural and Humanitarian cooperation

On a regular basis, the exchange of cultural events (concerts, cinema and culture days, exhibitions, etc.).

In 2013, the cooperation agreement between the Bologna University and the Kazakh University of international business (UIB).

In 2014 year, agreements have been concluded between the Kazakh National Academy of arts named after T.K.Zhurghenovand the National Academy of dramatic art.  Named after Silvio D'amico and the Academy of fine arts of Florence, as well as between the medical institute of Astana and the University of Rome "La Sapienza" on the exchange of students.
