The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) is an under-construction nuclear power plant located in the western region of Abu Dhabi, about 50 km from Al Ruwais and 330 km from Abu Dhabi.
The construction of the Baraka Nuclear Power Plant is the largest in the world and it is the only nuclear power project in which four APR-1400 units are being built simultaneously. The total capacity of four nuclear power units will cover up to 25% of UAE energy consumption without using carbons.
The main contractor and operator of the project is the South Korean consortium headed by the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) that won the international tender. The contract for the construction of 4 power units of the Nuclear Power Plant Baraka was signed in December 2009 in the amount of 20 billion USD.
On May 5, 2017, the United Arab Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation announced about the completion of the initial construction work on the first block of the Nuclear Power Plant Baraka jointly with the Korean Corporation KEPCO.
The ENEC Board of Directors has approved updated information on the exploitation start date of Unit 1, according to which the launch of the 1st unit is moved from 2017 to 2018 in order to provide sufficient time for international assessments and compliance with nuclear industry safety standards, as well as to increase the professional level of the station's personnel.Embassy of Kazakhstan in the UAE
