​Kairat Abdrakhmanov Meets with Delegations of Syrian Government and Syrian Armed Opposition

ASTANA, November 28, 2018 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Kairat Abdrakhmanov held a meeting with the head of the delegation of the Syrian Government, the Permanent Representative of Syria to the UN Bashar al-Jaafari, and accompanying persons as part of a new round of the Astana process. On the same day, the Foreign Minister met with a delegation of the Syrian armed opposition, led by Ahmed al-Toma.

The meetings were focused on discussing the negotiations agenda, the current situation on the ground, including in the Idlib province, the prospects for a final settlement of the protracted conflict, as well as the composition and launch of the Constitutional Committee on Syria.

“We are grateful to President Nursultan Nazarbayev for providing the negotiation platform, which today is the only working and effective mechanism for peacebuilding in Syria," Mr. al-Jaafari said.

During the meeting with the opposition delegation, Mr. Toma highlighted the role of the Astana process and stated that the negotiations in Astana are the only efficient tool in resolving the Syrian crisis.

In turn, within both meetings, Mr. Abdrakhmanov focused on the need to strengthen humanitarian efforts, including creation of conditions for the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid, further strengthening of confidence-building measures between the parties to the conflict, intensifying of the process of exchanging detainees, prisoners, and developing ways to evacuate foreign citizens from the conflict zone.

The issue of the return of refugees to Syria was also touched upon. The Kazakh side also reaffirmed its support for the UN efforts for a political settlement through the Geneva process.
