​Foreign Minister meets with Executive Director of CICA Secretariat

NUR-SULTAN, 5 June 2019 - Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Beibut Atamkulov recently received Executive Director of the Secretariat of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) Habibullo Mirzozoda.

During the meeting, the Foreign Minister noted that Tajikistan was the fourth state in the history of the CICA to chair the Conference, and thanked Mr. Mirzozoda for his active efforts in its further advancement and development.

Special emphasis was placed on the preparation for the upcoming fifth anniversary CICA Summit in Dushanbe, scheduled for June 14-15, 2019. The sides exchanged views on the Summit's outcome document, the Dushanbe Declaration.

Mr. Atamkulov expressed confidence that the upcoming Dushanbe Summit would significantly contribute to the implementation of the CICA objectives and principles aimed at strengthening dialogue and confidence in Asia.

The meeting noted that over 27 years since the establishment of the CICA, it has been transformed into an effective platform ensuring the promotion of mutually acceptable measures to solve problems and conflicts in Asia. By adhering to a multipolar approach and regional cooperation, the CICA has a positive impact on the growth of mutual trust and the development of security, stability and development across the Asian continent.

The sides outlined the relevance of the '3D' initiative presented by First President of Kazakhstan – Elbasy Nursultan Nazarbayev at the Second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing, which has the support of many states. The sides discussed the future interaction between the CICA and the OSCE in strengthening interregional cooperation and transcontinental security.

In conclusion, the sides focused on the importance of further institutionalizing the CICA and building its human resource capacity.

Note to editors: The idea of convening the CICA was presented by First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan – Elbasy Nursultan Nazarbayev at the 47th UNGA session on October 5, 1992. The initiative's main objective is to create an effective and sustainable organization for ensuring peace and security in the region, with headquarters in Nur-Sultan.

The CICA membership currently includes 27 Asian states. Eight countries and five international organizations are observers of the Forum.

In September 2018, on the margins of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly, the Forum's chairmanship passed from China to Tajikistan. Tajikistan chose 'General Peace and Security through Sustainable Development' as the theme of its chairmanship in the Dialogue.
