On June 1, 1992, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg recognized the state sovereignty of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
On June 29, 1992, the diplomatic relations between Kazakhstan and Luxembourg were established.
Since July 2012, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Luxembourg concurrently (with the residence in Brussels) is Mr. Almaz Khamzayev.
Since February 2012, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Luxembourg in Kazakhstan concurrently (with residence in Moscow) is Mr. Pierre Ferring.
Honorary Consul of Luxembourg for the North Kazakhstan regions is Mr.Aldyar Kaztayev.
Honorary Consul of Luxembourg for the Southern Kazakhstan regions is Mr.Aryf Shadiev.
The meeting between President of Kazakhstan Mr. Nursultan Nazarbayev and Prime Minister of Luxembourg Mr. Jean-Claude Juncker during the working visit of the Head of State in Brussels in December 2006 gave a significant impetus to Kazakhstan-Luxembourg cooperation.
On June 26-28, 2008, Prime Minister of Luxembourg Mr. Jean-Claude Juncker made his first official visit to the Republic of Kazakhstan. During this visit the Luxembourgish politician awarded the Head of State with the highest state award of Luxembourg - the Grand Cross of the Order of the Oak Crown for a special contribution to the development of bilateral relations. In his turn, Mr. Jean-Claude Juncker was awarded the “Dostyk" Order of first degree for strengthening of friendship between the peoples of the two countries.
On October 24, 2010 in Brussels, President of Kazakhstan met with Mr. Jean-Claude Juncker in the framework of the official visit of the Head of State to the Kingdom of Belgium.
In October 2014, President Nursultan Nazarbayev met Prime Minister of Luxembourg Mr. Xavier Bettel twice - on the margins of the Forum of Asia-Europe summit (ASEM) in Milan and the World Islamic Economic Forum in Dubai.
In 2015, the President met with the Prime Minister of Luxembourg twice. First time - during an official visit of Mr. Xavier Bettel to Kazakhstan on 21-23 May, where the Head of the Government was accompanied by Minister of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure Mr. François Bausch. The second meeting took place on September 29, 2015 in New York, on the margins of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly.
On May 2-3, 2012, Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Mr. Karim Massimov made a working visit to Luxembourg where he met with Grand Duke Henri, Prime Minister Mr. Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the Chamber of Deputies Mr. Laurent Mosar and other politicians of the country.
On April 23, 2014, Ambassador of Kazakhstan Mr. Almaz Khamzayev met with Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Luxembourg Mr. Jean Asselborn.
On October 27-29, 2014 Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Economy, the Minister of Internal Security and the Minister of Defence of Luxembourg Mr. Etienne Schneider visited Kazakhstan for the meetings with Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Mr. Karim Massimov and the other members of the Government.
On January 24, 2015, on the margins of the World Economic Forum in Davos Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Mr. Karim Massimov held a meeting with Prime Minister of Luxembourg Mr. Xavier Bettel.
On March 2, 2015 within the framework of the visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Mr. Erlan Idrissov to Brussels he held a meeting with the Belgian Secretary of State for migration and asylum Mr. Teo Franken and signed the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Governments of the Benelux countries for the visa waiver for holders of diplomatic passports, the Agreement between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Benelux countries on the readmission and the Protocol its implementation.
On May 21-23, 2015 during his official visit to Kazakhstan Prime Minister of Luxembourg Mr. Xavier Bettel met his counterpart Mr. Karim Massimov and Minister for Investment and Development of Kazakhstan Mr. Aset Issekeshev.
The parties signed the intergovernmental Agreement between Kazakhstan and Luxembourg on air transportation and the Memorandum of Understanding between the National Bank of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Agency for transfer of financial technologies of Luxembourg.
During the plenary session of the VIII Astana Economic Forum Mr. Xavier Bettel made an opening speech and Director General of “Luxembourg for Finance" Mr. Nicolas Mackel presented Luxembourg at the Investment Forum “Invest in Kazakhstan".
Trade and economic cooperation
In the first ten months of 2016 the trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Luxembourg amounted to $ 16,7 million (export - $ 4,6 thousand, import - $ 16,7 million).
From Luxembourg Kazakhstan imports machinery, electrical equipment, plastics and articles thereof, rubber, mechanical rubber, textiles and base metals.
The total volume of Kazakh direct investment (DI) in Luxembourg for the past five years amounted to $ 20.3 million.
During the first 6 months of 2016 a record volume of DFI from Luxembourg to Kazakhstan was registered - $ 64.8 million. (in 2015 - $ 166.4 million.). The total volume of Luxembourg DFI to Kazakhstan over the past five years amounted to $189.1 million.
Cultural and humanitarian cooperation
On September 28-30, 2007, the Kazakhstan delegation with representatives of the Assembly of People of Kazakhstan, members of the Mazhilis of the Parliament, Chairmen of the different national and cultural centres, directors of some leading universities of the country, visited Luxembourg. One of the main events during the visit, jointly organized with the European Institute of Culture named after P.Verner, was a “round table" on "Cultural diversity and inter-ethnic harmony in Kazakhstan".
On March 15 - April 6, 2014 in the castle Vianden an exhibition of the Kazakh artist Mr. Rustam Omirzak took place.
On March 29, 2015 in the city Luxembourg an exhibition of paintings by artists of Kazakhstan “Between the Caspian and Altai", dedicated to the celebration of Nauryz, took place.
